This week's QueerAF is made possible by Christian Schulz-Quach, MD, MSc, MA, MRCPsych, MDPAC(C). He supported our crowdfunder as a 'newsletter champion' directly funding ten issues of the newsletter and will be named as an honorary editor of QueerAF for all those issues. Thank you, Christian.

He is a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. He is also the Program Director of Sexual and Gender Diversity in Cancer Care (SGDc). His expertise is in gender, sex, and relationship diversity (GSRD) therapy, which explores the intersections of queerness, mental health, and systemic change.

"I support QueerAF because queer existence is an act of courage—one that affirms being in the face of erasure, marginalization, and systemic exclusion. Tillich’s words remind us that to live authentically as queer individuals is not just an act of survival but of radical self-affirmation. QueerAF fosters this courage by amplifying voices, nurturing community, and insisting that we not only exist but thrive."

Understand the LGBTQIA+ headlines and keep track of the latest queer content and perspectives. The QueerAF newsletter is written by Jamie Wareham and a different queer creative each week.

💬 This week:

  • Hungary: A court case brought by a trans refugee has set an EU-wide precedent on legal gender recognition. We explore its significance.
  • Chemsex: A subject we’ve covered for a number of years is back in the headlines. We look at a new investigation into chemsex, and how as a community we need to apply compassion and care.
  • Walk: In a special excerpt from the Trans+ History Week workbook, we share a beautiful short story about Jade, who finds solace, community and joy at a ballroom evening.

Skip the doomscrolling and support queer creatives instead. We are QueerAFand so are you.

A trans refugee's court case against Hungary just improved Trans+ rights across all of Europe

TL;DR: A trans refugee's challenge of Hungary's refusal to recognise his gender identity on legal documents has set a precedent for the whole European Union that could lead to changes all over the continent.
