We're back!
Before we crack on with the newsletter you know and love, I just wanted to say it's so wonderful to be back. Thank you for all your kind messages while I was away recovering in hospital over Christmas.
But even better - Happy Birthday to QueerAF!
It's fantastic to be back at full steam again as we celebrate two years since we officially launched, on the same day police announced theyβd investigate Boris Johnson over party gate and rather stole our thunder.
Despite that, as a small indie publisher, we continue to punch through the noise with our calm approach to helping you understand the LGBTQIA+ world.
Over the next few weeks, to celebrate both two years of our unique approach to queer journalism and LGBT+ History Month, we're going to be up to all sorts:
- Crowdfunder: Launching our annual crowdfunder, for a project that will invest in Trans+ creatives.
- Disruptors: Releasing our first-ever editorial list celebrating disruptive innovators in the UK's LGBTQIA+ community.
- Secret data: Publishing our annual transparency report with secret data that other publishers don't let you see.
- Annual report: Sending our latest members-only newsletter with our detailed CIC (Community Interest Company) report and a look at the successes of our last year's efforts.
For now, though, in a year that will go down in history as hosting the most democratic elections ever - 24 countries are going to the polls - let's get back to basics:
Understand the LGBTQIA+ headlines and keep track of the latest queer content and perspectives.
QueerAF is written by Jamie Wareham and a different queer creative each week.
π¬ This week:
- Employment Tribunals. As a growing number of the lower tier courts rule in favour of people with 'gender critical' views, we seek to clarify their impact.
- Greece. The country has a deeply conservative history and large Orthodox Christian community. We look at how this is impacting the new government's plans for same-sex marriage.
- Ricky Gervais. Off the back of another grim comedy special and with a direct parallel to the impact of beliefs and actions in todayβs top story β this week's Queer Gaze explores the growing parallels of Gervaisβ supposedly βharmlessβ comedy with the dangerous misogyny off Andrew Tate.
- Bonus! To make up for being away for a few weeks, we've dropped in a bunch of bonus links into this week's edition.
Skip the doomscrolling and support queer creatives instead. We are QueerAF β and so are you.
Gender-critical advocates are claiming 'victory' in employment tribunals - but it's not that simple
TL;DR: Another employment tribunal which centred around 'gender-critical' beliefs ruled in favour of the claimant this week. However, despite several cases garnering high media attention, the rulings in each instance are more nuanced. Crucially, though they confirm religion and beliefs are protected in the Equality Act they also confirm acting on those beliefs isn't necessarily.
